Nahum felt as if heâd betrayed his brothers as well as himself by using Belialâs jewellery, and he suspected Ash thought so, too, which was why he was lurking alone in the greenhouse. He also sensed that Briar had been holding back her feelings in the car.
He tried to distract himself from worrying about their current troubles by studying the Emerald Tablet. Unfortunately, stray thoughts of Olivia kept popping into his mind. Her warm hands, smooth as silk skin, and soft, welcoming mouth. Herneâs horns. What had he done? Belial had thrown him off his stride in more ways than one.
The trouble was, he had avoided sex ever since he arrived in this world. It had complicated his previous life; he hadnât wanted it to complicate this one. Unlike Gabe, his marriage was loveless, and he did not have children. His marriage was to unite the warring Houses of the Fallen. An alliance between him and the half-sister of another Nephilim. As he predicted, it had meant politics, manoeuvrings, arguments, and general annoyance. He had not been a faithful husband, but she had also not been a faithful wife. He continued to fight, drowning himself in blood, and then entered the courts of kings to negotiate peace. But the politics of that marriage had rumbled on.
That was one good thing about the floodâhis marriage was over. He couldnât even say that he was scarred by it. He didnât harbour any feelings one way or the other towards his wife. Now, he sought to keep his life uncomplicated. And he was determined that it would remain so. Olivia was a woman of the world. He had stipulated the rules, and she had been happy to comply. It was fine. He probably wouldnât see her for months. So, why was he so worried about her? Because he was a friend, obviously.
âWhat are you talking to yourself about?â Shadow said, sounding amused.
He leapt around, sword drawn. âHerneâs fucking balls, Shadow! Do you have to creep around?â
âI am fey!â She smirked as she leaned against the greenhouse door. He hadnât even felt a cold draught as she entered. âYou were bobbing your head and muttering. You look quite cross!â She strolled down the gravel path towards him, hips swinging, dagger twirling between her fingers. âAre you chastising yourself for wearing Belialâs jewellery?â
âYes, absolutely.â It wasnât a total lie.
In a split second her dagger vanished, and she wagged a finger at him. âI think itâs more than that. Did something happen with Olivia?â
âNo! What makes you say that?â
âBecause youâre all riled up, and you, Nahum, are never riled up.â She prowled around the tablet, watching him, her figure sometimes blinking out of sight as her fey glamour soaked up the green earthiness of the greenhouse.
âI drew on Belialâs power last night, in case you forgot. I was incandescent! Of course Iâm annoyed.â
âAs insane as that was, I think it was a brilliant strategic move. You know he canât possess you. Unsettle you, yes. Worry he might have growing influence in this world, yes, but he cannot affect you unwillingly.
